Fish on the Green, Bearsted
Fish on the Green is one of Kent’s best seafood restaurants. Listed in the Michelin guide and holding two AA rosettes, it is located on Bearsted’s village green next to the historic Oak on the Green pub. Originally a stable, it is now a warm and welcoming dining room with a small bar area.
We arrived late afternoon on a Sunday and received friendly greetings from the waitressing team before being shown to
our corner table. The restaurant offers a lunch menu priced at £25.95 for two courses or £28.95 for three, and à la carte menu.
They also have a full allergen/dietary menu. Food is sourced locally wherever possible, and dishes prepared using freshly caught fish and the finest ingredients. There is a comprehensive drinks menu which includes English wines from local estates.
We were at the restaurant to celebrate a birthday and it was a real delight to relax and unwind in the cosy atmosphere. For starters we chose the tasty crab arancini which came with a saffron aioli and mixed leaves, and the shellfish cocktail – a sumptuous feast of fresh lobster, langoustine, crab and prawns. Other options included one of my other favourites – Jersey rock oysters – which were unavailable that day, seared Scottish scallops and a goats cheese panna cotta. Portions are fairly generous, but not large enough to put you off your main course. Prices range from £7.95 for the vegetarian option to £15.95 for the oysters.
The à la carte fish mains include lobster thermidor, halibut and whole lemon sole, but most of us were won over by the daily
special of turbot. This was perfectly pan fried and accompanied by a delicious saffron velouté, broccoli and sauté potatoes. The restaurant was also able to provide the same dish gluten free. One of our group prefers steak to fish and she thoroughly
enjoyed the large fillet of beef which had a stilton crust, sauteed wild mushrooms and a thyme jus and came with lyonnaise potatoes and wilted, baby spinach. The other meat dish was a confit of belly of pork. We did notice that there is currently no main vegetarian course on the menu. Prices range from £20.95 for the pork to £40.00 for the lobster. There is also a good range of side dishes including hand cut chips, green beans and spinach with cream.
We were full after the main course and so chose not to have puddings, instead just enjoying a chat and drinks. We’d earlier been joking with our waitress about the birthday boy preferring to drink Coke instead of alcohol after his evening out the
night before and were then given a surprise when the waitress brought over a celebration birthday dessert. It was very kind and a great way to end the lovely meal and afternoon.
We look forward to returning to Fish on the Green soon!
