Basil, Tonbridge
Over the past month, I’ve been taking part in Run31 which was the January fund raising event for our charity of the year, Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance. The weather changed daily from snow and freezing frost, via beautiful blue skies and sunshine, to torrential rain and wind. So, on a frosty Wednesday it was lovely to escape from Tonbridge Park to the warm and cosy Basil café in the High Street.
Basil has a wholefood menu with food made daily from their own kitchen. They specialise in delicious quiches, frittatas, savoury pastries and salads but also have paninis and brunch/breakfast specials. Their raw ingredients are ‘conscientiously sourced’ with all the eggs used in their cakes and quiches free range. They ‘frequently buy organic, but believe above all else in supporting local farmers, growers, bakers and butchers.’
The café has a relaxed vibe; customers include groups, couples, families’, singles chilling out with a book and well behaved (my words) dogs.
I chose a sublime mushroom, truffle and parmesan quiche, and my friend plumped for the mozzarella, nut, butternut squash, and filo tart. These were served warm with a green side salad and were accompanied by a pot of tea. Basil recommends choosing from a variety of tasty salads – on that day this included a beetroot and watercress, a colourful coleslaw and a sweet potato and chilli with herbs. However, we didn’t fancy a salad and instead chose a delicious poppy seed and lemon cake – yum!
The choice of cakes included a fruit oat cake, a multi-tiered Victoria sponge and many others. It would be a shame to not try one 😊
We really enjoyed our relaxing time with delicious food at Basil’s and look forward to the next visit.
