The Swan on the Green dates back to the 16th Century and recently came into Community ownership after 463 shareholders raised over £550K to buy it.
The pub serves lunch from Weds to Sunday and supper from Weds to Saturday.
We visited recently to try out the new menu. The pub was full inside (most tables were reserved) but had space outside overlooking the green. I had a glass of fruity Primitivo whilst my friend suffered her alcohol-free lager (her turn to drive). The pub is friendly and relaxed with great staff. I noticed a few customers’ dogs sleeping under a table, so I’m guessing the pub is dog-friendly, but probably best to check when you book.
I had two starters: a delicious beetroot, goat cheese and cashew nut salad with lovely fresh leaves and a sticky balsamic dressing plus the spicy jerk sauteed tiger prawns which came with a lime and chilli mayo. The prawns were super tasty, and the jerk dressing hit the spot. My friend had a ploughman’s with excellent quality sausages and cheddar cheese accompanied by salad, pickles and sourdough bread. Portion sizes were just right. My friend was disappointed that there was no crusty bread instead of the sourdough – but everything else was perfect.
There are other great options on the menu including arancini, Iberico ham croquettes and a soup of the day. Mains have everything from Chargrilled Ribeye steak & chips, with saute vegetables & peppercorn sauce to Turkish chicken shish, flat bread & cous cous salad to Goan style cauliflower curry with pilau rice. There are also burgers, pub classics, platters and bloomer sandwiches with salad and chips.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t manage dessert – they had some lovely ones including Hugh Lowe farm strawberries and cream, crumbles and waffles. We will definitely be returning soon!
