Kudu

Working near Marylebone High Street recently, I took the opportunity to meet an old friend and have lunch at South African restaurant Kudu. Arriving early at 12 noon on a Saturday, we were immediately greeted by the professional and friendly waiting staff who welcomed us into the colourful, buzzing restaurant.

The comfortable seatings and stylish surroundings created a relaxing atmosphere. We started with sharing the Kudu bread with shrimp butter and the smoked prawn cruller with pickled cucumber. Both packed a punch and, accompanied by the house white wine, set us up for the main course.

My friend had the poussin with Kashmiri chilli crisp and baby gem whilst I chose the cape Malay monkfish with pickled fennel and sea beets. We shared side orders of the beef fat crispy fingerling potatoes and the African carrot with ras el hanout and goat’s curd.

The restaurant is expensive. Mains cost between £28 and £36 with the Kudu bread around £8. However, the quality is first rate and flavours unique. The fish is one of the best dishes I’ve eaten and, having tasted it, I can now understand what the fuss is about the bread and butter in the online reviews. It’s delicious!

Kudu is described in the Michelin guide as “an open fire braai restaurant.” Braai is a South African barbeque, and this forms the main section of their menu. In addition to the courses we chose you can also have lamb Barnsley chop, sirloin chop on the bone or hispi cabbage. They have sharers main courses (for 2 or more) including a whole black bream and a dry aged T-bone.

Desserts cannot be missed. My friend chose the Kudu ‘Kit Kat’ with burnt marshmallow and kumquat. The waiter comes along with a burning coal to create the burnt marshmallow. I enjoyed the fig pavlova with brandy jelly and blackberry. Flavours of both are intense.
