Bush, Blackbird and Thrush
On a cold, frosty evening it was a joy to be welcomed into Bush, Blackbird and Thrush. It lies snuggled in the beautiful countryside just outside East Peckham village. It is a warm, relaxing pub and restaurant where you can enjoy the open fires in either the pub with its friendly bar or the traditional restaurant.
Run by Anna and Monty, it is popular with both locals and regular customers from further afield, having a solid reputation for great country pub food and excellent beer. We visited on a freezing December evening but were soon warmed by the convivial atmosphere and glowing fireplace in the bar.
The pub has a good choice of daily blackboard specials to supplement the regular menu. Diners can choose to eat in the bar or restaurant area.
For starters we chose the crunchy and gooey, deep fried, breaded brie served with a blackcurrant jelly and salad plus the crab and prawn cocktail. Portions are generous. There are a wide selection of other starters including a daily homemade soup and a pate. Prices for starters average around £7.00.
For main my partner plumped for the perfectly cooked lamb steaks accompanied by vegetables and creamy, garlicy, dauphinoise potatoes – which he said were the best he’s ever tasted! My main course was the seafood platter which included crayfish, whitebait, scampi, prawns in tempura batter, two dips, a massive salad and chips! Absolutely delicious and I would recommend not wearing anything too tight! Main courses are excellent value averaging around £14.95 each.
In the interest of readers, we tried a couple of the puddings – well, truth be told I only managed a few spoonfuls but my partner polished off the rest! We chose the syrup sponge pudding and the apple crumble – you can choose to have them with cream, ice cream, custard or a combination of all three if you wish. Be warned – puddings are not for the faint hearted – however, they are amazing!
Normally at this point of reviewing a restaurant where the food has been wonderful it would be mentioned that we’re looking forward to going back – this time I’ve already returned, taking the KHD team for their Christmas lunch! We all had a great time enjoying the delicious food and friendly atmosphere!
If you fancy an outing then why not pop down to the Bush, Blackbird and Thrush yourself? For walkers it’s worth noting that there are plenty of lovely footpaths to explore in the area – and a footpath leads right to the large pub garden! You can even catch the train to Yalding and walk across fields to visit, only about one-and-a-half-miles!
