Finding a restaurant you want to return to once is a good sign. Returning several times is usually a much stronger endorsement.
Located on Gloucester Road in South Kensington, Da Mario has built a loyal following over many years and remains one of those rare restaurants that combines excellent food with genuine warmth and personality. Established as a family-run Italian restaurant, it has become something of a local institution and is perhaps best known for its long-standing connection with Princess Diana, who was a regular visitor.
What keeps us returning, however, is not the history but the overall experience. The atmosphere is lively, welcoming and full of character. The staff are friendly, attentive and clearly enjoy what they do, creating an environment that feels relaxed and fun without ever compromising on service.
The food consistently impresses. On one visit, the Spaghetti Vongole delivered everything you would hope for from this classic Italian dish, perfectly cooked pasta combined with fresh clams and beautifully balanced flavours. On another occasion, a striking homemade black squid ink pasta topped with a huge king prawn proved equally memorable.
The freshly baked breads are difficult to resist and make an excellent start to the meal. The pizzas are generously topped, the pasta dishes showcase authentic Italian cooking, and everything arrives beautifully presented.
Dessert is equally tempting. Both the cannoli and tiramisu provided a fitting finale, rich in flavour while retaining the lightness and elegance that good Italian desserts should have.
In a city filled with restaurant choices, Da Mario continues to stand out through a combination of authentic Italian cooking, welcoming hospitality and a vibrant atmosphere. It is the sort of place that leaves you already planning what you will order on your next visit.
