Gaab Kao, Tonbridge

During the past two months we have made a conscious effort to go in search of new places and flavours. One of our recent discoveries is Thai restaurant, Gaab Kao in Tonbridge High Street.

With nearby parking at Tonbridge Castle, an inviting ambience and laid-back vibe, the restaurant was a welcome retreat from the chilly winter storms.

For starters we ate the aromatic duck served with thin pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce and the mixed platter which included succulent chicken, prawn tempura and crispy veg spring rolls. The different dipping sauces of satay and sweet chilli woke up the taste buds.

Gaab Kao’s menu is extensive, offering vegan, vegetarian, gluten free options in addition to seafood, fish and meat.

Main courses include traditional green and red Thai curries but also Jungle, Panang and Massaman. On our first visit we chose the chicken Panang and Massaman with Coconut rice. The Panang is spicy whilst the Massaman is much sweeter. We enjoyed them so much that we returned for a second visit and then tried the Chef’s special Chu Chi with Seabass and a Massaman with Jumbo prawns and Jasmine rice.

My personal favourite main course was the Chu Chi. Spicy with a touch of sweetness. A huge quantity of perfectly cooked seabass (probably enough for two, if you’re not too greedy!)

On each visit, the service was fast but relaxed and helpful, the food was flavourful and the ingredients of good quality. If you are looking for somewhere new to try this Winter, we suggest giving Gaab Kao a visit.
