Gurkha Valley, Tonbridge
As we move into the colder months, you might find yourself craving more comfort food. And what better comfort food than something hot and spicy? Just across the road from Tonbridge Castle, on the High Street, sits Indian & Nepalese restaurant Gurkha Valley. When visiting last Saturday, we were met with a friendly welcome and a brilliantly lively atmosphere.
Gurkha Valley’s menu is extensive, offering a mixture of traditional Nepalese and Indian food. There were plenty of seafood, meat and vegetable-based options, so it was a tough choice to make! In the end, we opted for the Salmon Tikka and Sheekh Kebab starters, both of which arrived steaming hot with sides of mixed leaves, chat masala and chutney. These were a lighter option, which was perfect as the mains were generously portioned.
For the main course, we tried; the mustang curry with lamb, the Thakali set with chicken, and the lasuni jhinga curry with a side of pilau rice. We also tried some Momo – traditional steamed Nepalese dumplings with your choice of filling (we opted for chicken). These dumplings come in a variety of styles, including chilli. All these dishes were new to us, and delicious.
My recommendation would be the Thakali set, which came with two smaller bowls of curry (one lentil, one chicken), rice, aloo achar, salad and a papadum. The lasuni jhinga was also a must-try dish, with plenty of big, juicy prawns served in a deliciously spicy curry.
The meal was so good that we went back the following Saturday, taking more of the family! This time we stuck to some favourites – the salmon tikka and the king prawn jhinga but also tried the onion bhajis, the Keema naan, and the aloo gobi. We also doubled up on the Momos.
As before, the service was fantastic and so helpful, the food was flavourful and the ingredients of high quality, and the restaurant itself bright and clean. Being close to the Castle, it’s also conveniently located a short walk from two car parks.
If you need a recommendation for somewhere new to try this Winter, we highly suggest giving Gurkha Valley a visit.
