Spiced Roots, Oxford
Tucked away in the heart of Oxford, Spiced Roots delivers a Caribbean dining experience that feels both authentic and thoughtfully modern.
During a recent weekend visit, it quickly became clear why this restaurant has built such a strong reputation.
The atmosphere is relaxed but buzzing, with friendly, helpful staff, great music and a menu which showcases the depth and vibrancy of Caribbean cuisine.
To begin, the saltfish croquettes and large shell on prawns with smoked paprika aioli were beautifully crisp and packed with flavour, while the jerk chicken spring rolls with salad brought freshness and subtle spice in equal measure.
For mains, the slow-braised Jamaican oxtail was a standout — rich, tender and deeply comforting, served alongside butter beans, creamy mac and cheese and crisp coleslaw. The tamarind glazed lamb chops were equally impressive, combining sweetness, spice and smokiness perfectly.
The drinks menu deserves special mention too. The Rum Bar Dark n’ Stormy cocktail — blending Gosling rum, lime, ginger beer and bitters — was exceptional. I haven’t tasted one as good as this for a long time and so can thoroughly recommend!
For pudding the vegan banana bread with caramelized banana glaze and ice cream was delicious – if you don’t fancy that, there is a classic rum cake with rum and raisin ice cream.
What makes Spiced Roots particularly memorable is the care behind the cooking and the fun – we had a great time. For anyone visiting Oxford and looking for something beyond the ordinary, this restaurant is worth discovering.
