The Seafood Restaurant, Padstow, Cornwall

The Seafood RestaurantLast week we were on holiday in Cornwall and took the opportunity to visit Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant. As a pescatarian, I’ve followed him for many years and still use one of his first cookbooks, Fruits of the Sea, which was published in 1995.

The Seafood Restaurant is located on the quay in Padstow in a bright and airy building. We received a warm, professional welcome and were led to a lovely table overlooking the harbour. Seating is well spaced, there is a well-designed bar area in the centre of the room and, although full, the restaurant feels relaxed and unrushed.

The Seafood RestaurantWe were there for lunch and had enjoyed a walk around Padstow before entering the restaurant so had a healthy appetite. We started with oysters which were served on ice with an optional vinaigrette and wedges of lemon. If you have never tried oysters before but are curious, I would recommend trying one here. Absolutely delicious and you can order as few – or as many as you like. To accompany this we had a Kir Royale.

The Seafood RestaurantFor starters we had the scallops served attached in the half shell with a classic soy, ginger and spring onion dressing, and the lobster risotto. The seafood was the star. When it is this fresh, you do not need much to enhance it.

The Seafood RestaurantFor the main course we had the turbot – it was served simply with a hollandaise sauce, seasonal greens, buttered carrots and new potatoes, – and the Pondicherry seafood curry which came with basmati rice and green beans. Portions are generous, flavours amazing and cooking spot on! I had a glass of Chassagne Montrachet white wine to accompany the turbot, which matched the dish well. (The restaurant uses the Coravin wine system which enables you to try different wines.)

We had no room for pudding but went instead for a walk along the beautiful coastline and later enjoyed an ice cream.

If you are in the area and love seafood and fish, we highly recommend a visit.
